Textile as an interface for Physical AI

Everyone is debating AI models.

Every company is evaluating the adoption or impact of AI on its business model, as it is fast proving that it is less a technology paradigm spoken of and is instead one that we are experiencing in real time.

For our part we continue to question both the design implications of AI on the systems within which humanity exists and the impact on its social structure.

Differentworks is not an AI company, we are a company that deals with what one can touch and feel – centered around the tangible product solutions that leverage materials to solve for human unmet needs.

Our focus in this new context has been on what happens when intelligence touches the human body.

As designers and creator’s, the industry has spent the last 50 years optimizing digital interfaces. The next decade may be about designing physical ones and that introduces a challenge I don’t think we’re talking enough about.

Humans are soft.

Intelligence is increasingly physical.

Yet most of our machines are still designed around rigid architectures.

I’m starting to see weak signals everywhere.

  • Wearables converging with soft robotics.
  • Textiles evolving from passive materials into sensing surfaces.
  • Haptics becoming critical to XR and teleoperation.
  • Protective equipment becoming adaptive.
  • Assistive systems becoming neuroadaptive.
  • Materials themselves becoming computational.

Individually, these trends seem unrelated.

Collectively, they point to something bigger.

An entirely new interface industry is emerging.

Not around models.

Not around robots.

But around the layer between intelligence and the human body and intelligence and humanoids/robotics, I think this shift introduces a different category of ethics.

We’ve spent years debating algorithmic ethics.

Bias. Transparency.

But physical AI introduces questions that are fundamentally human:

  • How should intelligence feel?
  • How much assistance becomes dependence?
  • When does augmentation become control?
  • How do we design for trust, dignity, and agency?
  • What responsibility do we have when machines can physically influence people?
  •  

Because once intelligence touches the body, ethics is no longer just computational.

It becomes material. I don’t believe the winners of the physical AI era will simply be the companies with the best models.

They may be the companies that understand compatibility.

Because physical AI won’t just need processors.

It will need skin.

It will need muscles.

It will need nervous systems.

And perhaps most importantly, it will need interfaces designed with empathy.

We’ve spent decades teaching machines how to think.

The next challenge may be teaching them how to touch.

And that feels less like a robotics problem and more like the formation of an adjacent industry.
